The Scottish Social Services Council is responsible for raising standards in the Scottish social service workforce. The SCAH vision is a competent, confident workforce, capable of delivering high quality services that has the confidence of the public, those who use services and their carers.

SCAH believe that service users and carers are at the centre of everything we do.

There are around 138,000 social care staff in Scotland, providing care and support to some of the most vulnerable sections of our society. SCAH members believe that their service users deserve to be helped by staff that has suitable training and qualifications for their job. Over the next few years we will see the registration of social care staff involved in providing or delivering social work, social care services and early education and child care. They will be expected to meet agreed standards of conduct, practice, education and training and this includes as a provider of Care at Home and Housing Support - your staff.

SSSC have an introductory leaflet and this website will tell you about their role and what they are doing to regulate and register the social service workforce.

Codes of Practice

The SSSC publishes Codes of Practice for Social Service Workers and Employers. These are standards of conduct and practice which all social service workers and their employers must follow. The Codes of Practice were produced in consultation with service users, lawyers and the Plain English Campaign. You must habe these to provide to evey member of your staff.

The Scottish Social Services Learning Network is an innovative project designed to support the learning and development of Scotland's social service workforce. Our purpose is to bring people and resources together to support effective practice. The Network is for the whole social services workforce. Irrespective of occupation or sector, if you're employed in a social service in Scotland we're here to support your learning and development needs.

what we do

We support the Scottish social service sector to:

  • ensure work based learning and development is comprehensive, efficient and integrated for all workers help people meet the requirements of the Scottish Social Services Council's Codes of Practice
  • help people meet registration and post registration requirements as determined by the Scottish Social Services Council
  • ensure the development of practice learning opportunities
  • collate, desseminate and understand data relating to workforce planning and development
  • empower people who use social services and their carers to play an active role in social service development
  • embrace effective working practices and support partnership working both within and outwith the social sector
  • help to develop a workforce fully prepared to meet the challenges and demands that lie ahead.
 
 
 
Annoucing the Private Care Sector Workforce Initiative
 
Private Care Sector Workforce Initiative which is to be managed by Scottish Care in partnership with Scottish Care at Home - on behalf of the wider private health and social care sector in Scotland.
 
The Initiative is funded to March 2009 by the Scottish Government through the Older People’s Unit and the Workforce & Capacity Issues Division. There is the possibility of funding to March 2010. 
 
The Initiative has arisen from the outcomes of the recent Workforce Surveys carried out by Scottish Care and Scottish Care at Home. Its main aim is to develop the capacity of the private care sector to deliver on the national workforce agenda through:
 
  • Involving employers in shaping the workforce of the future
  • Providing information on policy, regulation and registration
  • Developing an understanding of and engagement in workforce planning
  • Promoting best practice in recruitment and retention
  • Improving learning and development opportunities
  • Promoting access to and sufficiency of resources.
The Initiative team will be managed by David Rennie  accountable to Scottish Care and Scottish Care at Home. I was a consultant to both the Workforce Surveys. We have also contracted a small team to work to the objectives of the Initiative.
 
The attached E-Bulletin gives initial information and a new website was launched at the Scottish Care Annual Conference in Glasgow on 14 November details at www.workforceinitiative.co.uk.
 
The members of the team are greatly looking forward to progressing this important work over the coming months and to engaging with national and local stakeholders as well as private sector employers.

SCAH with its partners will seek a major national review of arrangements for the funding and delivery of all social care and support services.

The time is right for social care and support services to be the focus of future major governmental review and reappraisal: Changing Lives has helped us to identify what we should be providing: what is now urgently required is further work to identify how to provide it, in partnership.
